Taxis and Rideshare Drivers Outraged by New Fees
It’s been a week since New York City implemented its new surcharges for taxi and rideshare services, and drivers and riders alike are unhappy.
The new fees impose a flat rate on every ride taken in Manhattan, with a going rate of $2.50 per taxi ride and $2.75 for rideshares. Called “congestion charges,” the fees are also aimed largely at raising money for the NYC Subway. The fee is charged directly to the riders, and are therefore not supposed to cost the drivers in any way.
Many drivers disagree, with taxi drivers see the fees as the latest blow to their already struggling industry. Though several taxi drivers are suing over the new charges, a New York judge lifted a temporary restraining order against the fees while the case plays out in court. Until the court case has been settled, the future of the new surcharges remains uncertain. But for now, they’ve been given the green light.
With business already on the decline for New York City’s classic yellow cabs, there are concerns that these new fees could spell some serious trouble for taxis.
